“Libera me” From Hell – “Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann” Insert Song

[Requiem aeternam. Dona eis, Domine]

Do the impossible
see the invisible
raw! raw!
fight the power!

touch the untoucheable
break the unbreakable
raw! raw!
fight the power!

Power to the peeps, power for the dream
still missing piece scattering, so incomplete
we be the most incredible soldier from underground
see how easy, they all fall down
digging to the core to see the light
Let’s get out of here babe, that’s the way to survive, ya
top of the head, I’m on the set
do the impossible, don’t you wanna bet?
cuz, a lot of things changed, we be waiting in vain
if you wanna get by, no pain no gain
wow! fakers wanna test me again
sorry, my rhyme’s gonna snatch your brain, yo
I’m still starving for the straight up shit
we gonna make it happen with the crazy rap skill
get ready to rumble, now is the time, uh huh
if you ain’t know, now you know
good luck fellows!

[Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna,
in die illa tremenda. in die illa
Quando coeli movendi sunt terra,
Dum veneris judicare saeculum per ignem.
Tremens factus sum ego et timeo,
dum discussio venerit atque ventura ira.]

2nd verse dedicates to the real peeps
what we got to say is so real thing
cuz, revolution ain’t never gonna televise
kicking the mad flow, microphone phenotype
open your third eye, seeing through the overground
I’m about to hit you with the scream from the underground
whole city is covered with the cyber flavor
“G” is in your area, one of the toughtest enigma

[Dies illa, dies irae,
calamitatis et miseriae]

[dies illa dies magna]
Do the impossible
see the invisible
raw! raw!
fight the power!
touch the untoucheable
break the unbreakable
raw! raw!
fight the power!
[et amara valde. et amara valde]
what you gonna do is what you wanna do
just break the rule, then you see the truth
this is the theme of “G” coming through baby!
raw! raw!
fight the power!

FIGHT THE POWER!!!

[Requiem aeternam, dona eis Domine]
Do the impossible
see the invisible
raw! raw!
fight the power!
touch the untoucheable
break the unbreakable
raw! raw!
fight the power!
what you gonna do is what you wanna do
just break the rule, then you see the truth
this is the theme of “G” coming through baby!
raw! raw!
fight the power!

[Requiem aeternam, dona eis Requiem]
Do the impossible
see the invisible
raw! raw!
fight the power!
touch the untoucheable
break the unbreakable
raw! raw!
fight the power!
what you gonna do is what you wanna do
just break the rule, then you see the truth
this is the theme of “G” coming through baby!
raw! raw!
fight the power!

[et lux perpetua luceat eis]
what you gonna do is what you wanna do
just break the rule, then you see the truth
this is the theme of “G” coming through baby!
raw! raw!
fight the power!

[Libera me, Domine]
Do the impossible
see the invisible
raw! raw!
fight the power!

raw! raw!
fight the power!
raw! raw!
fight the power!
raw! raw!
fight the power!
raw! raw!
fight the power!
raw! raw!
fight the power!
raw! raw!
fight the power!
[Libera me, Domine]
raw! raw!
fight the power!
raw! raw!
fight the power!
raw! raw!
fight the power!
raw! raw!
fight the power!

note :
Libera me is a part of the Requiem Mass of the Roman Catholic Church, as such it is in Latin.

here’s the lyric for “Libera me” part :

Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna in die illa tremenda;

Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna in die illa tremenda.

Libera me, Domine, quando coeli movendi sunt et terra;
dum veneris judicare saeclum per ignem.

Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna in die illa tremenda.
Libera me.

and the translation :

Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death on that awful day,
when the heavens and the earth shall be moved:
when you will come to judge the world by fire.

I tremble, and I fear the judgment and the wrath to come, when the heavens and the earth shall be moved.

The day of wrath, that day of calamity and misery; a great and bitter day, indeed.

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them.

Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death on that awful day.

Deliver me, O Lord, when the heavens and the earth shall be moved;
when you will come to judge the world by fire.

Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death on that awful day.
Deliver me.

This song is so inspiring. :DDD Thanks for the lyrics!

I want to learn how to sing the opera part of this. Sadly, I suck at Latin pronunciation. Also, I’m more of an alto than a soprano. ;___;

14. flatulant - Maret 25, 2008

I just noticed something; this song is like a duel of Spirals vs. Anti-Spirals. The rap part is the Dai-Gurren dan, and the opera part is the Anti-Spirals

15. Bard - Maret 25, 2008

Oh, you know what, #14 Flatulant? That makes perfect freaking sense. I was just about to mention how “requiem aeternam, dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis” didn’t seem terribly intuitive as background music for kicking ass and – erm, actually, that thing I was about to say fits just fine there, which is why I singled out those lines to begin with.

I’d always heard it as “bro, bro, fight the power” myself.

16. Zan - April 30, 2008

This song, and the anime it’s in, is epic!

RAW RAW FIGHT DA POWA!!!

17. brast - Juni 21, 2008

RAW-RAW Iwasaki Taku ^^v

23. Alex - Agustus 29, 2009

“RAW! RAW!”? How’d you mess that up, but do so well with the rest of the song? It’s obviously “ROW! ROW!” There’s no question about that.

24. Hey fags. - September 16, 2009

It’s ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER!

Not RAW RAW.

I mean what the fuck?!

25. alblack - September 19, 2009

Sorry guys all tha people that are sayingt that it´s ROW… are wrong!!!
check the official site and other respectful lyrics sites, the official lyrics said RAW!!

but you´re not completely wrong, it´s very common and acceptable to say ROW ROW FIGHT THA POWAH.

please search for Iwasaki Taku “Libera me” or “Libera me from hell” thanks

26. Reis - Desember 3, 2009

i allways thought it was “whow, whow, fight the power!” but oh well i guess RAW RAW is alright :L

27. Reis - Desember 4, 2009

oh and what does it mean by “this is the theme of “G” coming through baby!” anyone?

28. Ledundead - Desember 7, 2009

@27 Reis: The Theme of the ‘G’urren Brigade, I always assumed.
ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH

29. Query - Desember 8, 2009

I always thought it was Bro, bro, fight the power, myself :P I like it better my way..

30. Alex - Desember 8, 2009

@Query, why?

31. D-chi - Desember 13, 2009

I was wondering if anyone had the sheet music for the Latin part. It would be fun to learn. (I study opera, so I’m not a bad singer or anything. :D) In some parts the words and notes aren’t distinct and I can’t hear them over the instrumental part.

32. RandolphKennedy - Desember 20, 2009

The original latin translation of “Libera Me” is supposed to justify something about the lyrics to “Libera Me” from Hell right?

Because frankly – the lyrics are god awful. It’s a great song – don’t get me wrong – but anyone (and this isn’t limited to rappers or poets) who’s made it past the third grade of the English language will recognize just how terribly they are. They have nothing to do with “Libera Me” from Hell or delivering one from hell at all – but sounds instead like an amateur rapper crossed with a childish pep rally anthem.

But the music writing – that’s incredible. The original Libera Me is an amazing classical piece but I never thought adding a piano motif to it could elevate it to such an impressive emotional resonance.

Now – you know how choir sections are often sung in latin in many musical pieces? I suppose… the most redeeming way to look at this song – is that from a Japanese or in fact, any non-English speaking person’s point of view – the vocals are like latins. They’re there for a sophisticated “linguistic” percussion more than for actual lyricism.

With all of that said, I still love this song. It could be so much better with more literately sensible lyrics – but perhaps they’ll release a japanese version someday. Or hire a decent songwriter, which – no matter what language – is always good.

33. zaphod - Januari 29, 2010

Don’t complain about the lyrics until you’ve watched the anime. The titular Team Gurren actually DOES touch the untouchable, see the invisible, do the impossible, and break the unbreakable.

Yes, they are corny as all heck, but the song WORKS.

Kamina said it best. Go beyond the impossible and kick reason to the curb! That’s the Team Gurren way! And it’s absolutely the right thing to do in the setting.

34. biber hapı - Juni 5, 2010

@Query, why?

35. Tyciol - Juni 14, 2010

So where do we download this song?

36. Magzodius - Juli 1, 2010

YO BRO TAKE A SHOWA!

37. Sheewa - Juli 26, 2010

YOUR’S IS THE DRILL THAT WILL PIERCE THE HEAVENS!

38. Joaquín Dalenz - September 22, 2010

If there’s a serie that can be said that is SO FUCKING EPIC!!!! that its GURREN LAGANN, I had seen explotions, super powers, women with great boobs and amazing speechs in other series, but Gurren Lagann has all this charasteristics and MORE, man, it was fuckin’ awesome watch the Arc Gurren Lagann it a foe to the continuous space-time with one punch, THE CONTINUOUS SPACE-TIME!!!!! that was just epic.

39. Tim - Desember 16, 2010

yeah! epic song!

Do the impossible!
see the invisible!
RAW! RAW!
FIGHT THE POWER!!!

40. Weslebear - Januari 5, 2011

I would like to mention to anyone that the “the theme of G” isn’t actually a reference to the Gurren Brigade, it’s a common phrase in rap, G standing for gangster.

41. Jason Pratt - Januari 29, 2011

I’m pretty sure the Anti-Spirals weren’t trying to grant eternal rest and light, in the sense implied by the Latin Mass. But yes, the English lyrics, which fit the plot of the show pretty well, could fit a reversed-hell scenario in conjunction with Libera Me, with people breaking out of (what amounts to an imposed) hell to challenge (an unjust) God. (Though the salvational peace and light don’t fit that notion, again.)

As long as they’re ignoring a couple of things about the Libera Me, though, we can ignore a couple of things about Tarantula’s lyrics and get an interesting different result, too! {g}

After all, on the show they certainly don’t dig to the core to see the light–on the contrary, the whole thematic point (which the Anti-Spirals are worried about, with some real justification after all) is to keep going up! And in Christian parlance, touching the untouchable, breaking the unbreakable, seeing the invisible, and even doing the impossible, all have rather different important meanings.

Looked at from the perspective of one occasionally popular (if minority) Christian interpretation of the scriptural verses behind the Libera Me–and ignoring the typical ego trip of the rapper (parts of the second half of the first verse, and all the second verse)–the combined song would be about someone caught in hell praying for salvation in the coming day of the Lord, and the Lord coming (with the Church following in support) to raid hell, break the tyranny of the rebel angels, and set free the souls imprisoned there, finally giving them eonian rest and light: a scary process, but one with a good ending for everyone involved.

(Not a Roman Catholic interpretation, to be sure, though they have their moments when they approach this, too; more of an Eastern Orthodox line of thought with a little Protestant agreement in the West.)

42. Anonymous - Februari 16, 2011

Totally disagree with Jason Pratt comment, i tend to belive that the libera me part is the anti-spiral one. God dammint, Catholicism is the anti-spiral!!! always stoping us for going further, telling us our nature is wrong! The show and the song is totally pro-nihilistic, in a positive constructive way, something never seen before.
I totally support the english part of the lyrics. “Let’s get out of here babe”, “we be waiting in vain”, totally the oposite to a lame christian cosmovision where a superior god comes and save us. FUCK GODS, and fuck nature and science and the market and the stablishment and evething external to us, is all in our hands, we can do what we want! Because “what you gonna do is what you wanna do”. RAW RAW FIGHT THE POWA!. And ofcourse a special note to “revolution ain’t never gonna televise”. I really think gurren laggan is maybe one of the best artworks ever, and has unlimited philosophical connotances. It can be the kickstart, or at least the inspiration for a new philosophy that enables a new hope and revolution in the world. Yeah, we are alone in a desert. But that is not bad! a desert is the best place for a men to live, there are no walls or roofs!. This is the ultimate philosophy, the ulitmate polical theory, the last religion. We can create the universe that we want from our will alone and destroy all limits. RAW RAW FIGHT THE POWER.

43. Sophy - Maret 2, 2011

I believe this song is a little weird… well, when I first listened to it my ear couldn’t adjust to that specific mix Opera/Rap. And I didn’t found the epic everybody was talking about. But then I saw the series and I started to like it more and more… Just for the symbolism.

Anyways, is easy to compare all this with christianism and stuff, but I think the real meaning of the latin chorus there is to give a requiem to Kamina, let him finally rest in peace (He couldn’t do it before because he was watching over Simon and company, remember that his soul saved them from the anti-spiral dream). His will was finally being fullfilled: all people was fighting and daring to do the imposible for the sake of their dreams. He could go and do manly things in heaven with no worries, everybody would be fine down there.

And the rap side is to remember what was the will Gurren Laggan dudes were fullfilling.

So yeah… All that made me cry when I listened the song again after last chapter.

44. windrixx - Maret 10, 2011

42. Anonymous. Is that a hint of existentialism I detect?

This anime is loaded with significant things. Make what you will of it. But even if you haven’t watched it, you have to admit

This song is epic sick.

45. not important - Maret 17, 2011

Why did you put

RAW RAW FIGHT THE POWER.

when it is

ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER.

Other then that. good job.

46. Death warmed over - April 12, 2011

Line 12 of the first big rant is “Sorry my rhyme’s gonna stunt your brain”, not “snatch”. Also, WTF RAW. IT’S ROW.

47. Kim - April 27, 2011

huh I thought it was BRO BRO Fight the Powwer

48. Svenge - Mei 13, 2011

@ DWO & Kim:

According to the official lyrics from the Japanese OST CD, it’s “snatch your brain”, and “RAW” not “ROW”.

49. Bard - Mei 29, 2011

Wait, so this song does get to the bit about the luceat doing its lux? Pity.

Still, this is the song that defined the episode that finally convinced me that there is no Curse of the Phone Booth and I just picked an ill-fated first two anime to watch.

50. Cheroro - Juli 23, 2011

There is no chance that’s “raw raw fight the powah”. They definitely say row row fight the powah. I don’t care what any official lyrics say.

51. Lord_Fungi - Agustus 11, 2011

Clean the unmentionables, scrub the unscrubable, bro bro take a shower! XD sorry, had to say it.

52. Tyciol - Desember 18, 2011

Wasn’t “defeat the invincible” also a line in this song?

53. The Me That Believes in You - Desember 18, 2011

Everyone saying “ROW ROW” over “RAW RAW” isn’t taking proper Engrish into consideration. Remember your ranguage, the word “Raw” reads very differently over there.

Besides, what the fuck would “ROW ROW” mean anyways? Row row row your boat, fight the power?

These guys are raw, hard-edged, take-no-shit individuals. They’re RAW, RAW and they FIGHT THE POWAH.

Use your goddamn grey matter, people.

54. floral design - April 8, 2013

I blog frequently and I truly thank you for your information.
This article has truly peaked my interest. I’m going to take a note of your blog and keep checking for new information about once a week. I opted in for your Feed too.

55. ginger - Mei 25, 2013

The trials have so far only been tested on rats, but the research looks promising and soon
we may see ginger being recommended for diabetics. Spring onions are usually used as garnish in the curry.
There are also various breathing exercises which will be effective in open some of the
many airways and let in some new oxygen.
